There is no admission charge for this kickoff event for the cemetery’s three-year commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War (www.vietnamwar50th.com). Docents and counselors will be available on site. The traveling Wall is courtesy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and is being hosted by the Avenue of Flags Committee in support of Golden Gate National Cemetery. An Avenue of Flags subcommittee comprised of more than 100 volunteers, co-chaired by two Vietnam U.S. Army veterans — Chaplain (Col.) Leo McArdle, U.S. Volunteers-America, and Romie Bassetto, 1st vice commander, District 26, American Legion Post 105 in Redwood City — banded together to donate hours of their time and effort to make this event a reality.
After The Wall’s scheduled arrival from Marin County via the Golden Gate Bridge at 2 p.m, Wednesday, a brief opening ceremony will be held at the cemetery at 10 a.m, essie ballet slippers Thursday, McArdle will be master of ceremonies, Gold Star family Linda and Steve Patterson, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., who founded America Supporting Americans in 1991 to encourage cities to adopt units, will be the guest speakers, A former San Mateo resident, Linda received a letter from her brother, Joe Artavia, while he was serving in Vietnam, asked her to get a city (San Francisco or San Mateo) to adopt his unit to boost its morale, She succeeded in getting the City of San Mateo to adopt Company A, 1-327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles) adopted on March 4, 1968, which did boost the unit’s moral, Sadly, her brother was killed in action 20 days later..
Linda traveled to Vietnam to visit the unit and while there she met 1st Lt. Steve Patterson — they later married. In 1991, the couple founded America Supporting Americans to encourage other cities to adopt units as San Mateo did. MyLiberty of San Mateo will hold a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. April 10 to read the names of 107 former San Mateo County residents who are on the wall and place a flower for each one (go to www.virtualwall.org/istate/istatca.htm). Local officials from cities that have a former resident on the wall have been invited to have someone read the names.

Since then, The Wall That Heals has visited more than 400 cities and towns throughout our nation to bring the memorial’s healing legacy to millions, allowing the souls enshrined on the memorial to once more be among family and friends in the peace and comfort of familiar surroundings. The traveling exhibit also provides an opportunity for thousands of veterans, who have not been able to cope with the prospect of facing The Wall, to find the strength and courage to do so within their own communities, which allows the healing process to start.
